What type of bike do I need?
A bike with a good selection of gears, wide, grippy tyres (mountain bike style) and good brakes front and rear is required for the 11.5 or 8.5k loops. A BMX bike or similar would be fine to use on the Kids course.
3hrs is a long time! I don't think I am in any shape to ride for that long. Can I stop when I have had enough?
Yes, you can stop whenever you like even along the course. Just let the timing officials know if your not going to complete anymore laps.
If I get a flat or something breaks is help available?
Not really. It is encouraged to have your bike serviced before the race and to carry a spare tube and pump. We will have limited tools and spare parts available on the day but if you get in a pickle ask around.
If I win do I get a prize?
Yes. Winners normally get a unique lump of timber with a scrap bike part wedged on the top and a little prize money if available. The winners are the riders who complete the most laps in the shortest time. The losers are those that don't give this a go.
I have a tendency to crash easily. How hard is the course to ride? Do I need to be a pro to complete a lap?
No you don't need to be a pro. You will need a basic level of fitness to make some of the rocky climbs. And walking your bike for sections is fine. The 2021 course includes sections which are quite technical and dismount prior for the beginner would be advised. All hazards will be marked accordingly so there will be no surprises.
How long will it take to complete a lap?
Depends how hard you push. The long course average lap time has been estimated to be about 40mins. This will vary of course, especially if you stop to take photos, rest under a tree and have a picnic or race like an absolute gun and thrive on anaerobic burn.
Is there anything else to do in Whyalla this weekend?
Yes, for an adventurous sneak peak at the track the night before you could enter in the Howling Dog After Dark Trail Run www.howlingdogwhyalla.weebly.com. You could also check out the Whyalla's new circular jetty, dolphins at the marina chasing fishing boats back to the boat ramp, take a Steel Works tour or climb aboard the landlocked ship at the Whyalla Maritime Museum. Make a weekend of it with fun stuff to do for the whole family.
